Free Gaza Demo
Went on the Free Gaza demo today. It was a march from the BBC headquarters at Portland Place to Hyde Park via the American Embassy at Grosvenor Square.
It was a great day. The event went very well and the mood was very good, helped I think by the glorious sunshine. This was the latest in a series of protests against Israel's mass killing of innocents. The demo was made up of people from all walks of life, faiths and nationalities. There was a lot of Muslims there. I would say it was half Muslim and half non-Muslim. It was great to see Jews there too, denouncing Israel's atrocities and saying "not in my name". I also saw some women from my homeland, Scotland, waving Scotland flags alongside Free Gaza placards. Then was completely gobsmacked to discover that I knew one of them, whom I hadn't seen for thirty years! It was a big big demo. I find it difficult to judge numbers but seeing everyone at the destination point in Hyde Park and comparing it with the 60,000 people I have seen at a football match, I would say it was multiples of that. There was a number of speakers at Hyde Park. One of the biggest cheers was for a Jewish guy from an organisation of Jews that support Palestine. That sums it up for me. It is often portrayed as Jew versus Muslim but it's really Israel versus Palestine. Today Muslims, Jews, Christians and others walked shoulder by shoulder to protest against Israel's war crimes. A united sense of outrage and great to be a part of it. I only took one picture. It was the most striking image of the day. Orthodox Jews protesting against Israel and shaking hands with Muslims. Again summing up what it's all about. Posted in categories Events Politics Post URL https://londontownblog.com/posts.php?post=109 |

Velvet Ferrari
Spotted this interesting Ferrari, parked behind Harrods. Finished in black velvet. The name badge "BADER" was made from a blingy diamond material.
Must be a bugger to clean, noticed it was a bit dirty around the door bottoms. Suppose you would rub it down with a clothes brush! Posted in categories Cars Post URL https://londontownblog.com/posts.php?post=108 |

Eros Statue at Christmas
Noticed the Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus had been converted into a massive snow globe/shaker thing. It's actually an ad for a mobile phone. Not sure I agree with advertisers taking over landmarks in this way. Saw it yesterday.Posted in categories Places Post URL https://londontownblog.com/posts.php?post=107 |

London Eye River Cruise
Went on the London Eye and the London Eye river cruise yesterday. Glorious hot sunny day for September, about 25 degrees but felt much hotter out on the boat!
The cruise was fantastic. Been living in London for over four years but felt like a tourist, complete with my camera! Thought I knew all about London Town but the cruise was an education, very informative and good to see the town from a different viewpoint. Went on the London Eye also. Had done that before, years ago. Being a hot sunny day the ice-cold air conditioning in the capsule was most welcome! The first time I did it, there was a host in the capsule, explaining what the various buildings were. They have now been replaced with tablets which are practically useless and made for an almost boring ride. The foreign people on board didn't know what they were looking at. There wasn't a fun atmosphere. Very quiet. The tablets didn't have any sound on them and appeared to play a video which explained the sights but I couldn't even be bothered watching the introduction. I can watch such a thing online. Seemed bloody stupid to be up in a capsule and looking at a screen! This is the thing though, tablets are very trendy and are perceived to be the way to go. A good demonstration here of how they have severely impaired a visitor experience by trying to be interactive and missing the point completely. Olympic Men's Road Cycle Race
Watched the Olympic Men's Road Cycle Race this morning on Fulham Road. Which is only two minutes from me...good to see some of the Olympics conveniently and for free!
It wasn't hugely busy which surprised me. The torch relay on Kings Road was much busier, but then there would be more people there normally. After waiting a few years to see it, it was over in five seconds! They all passed in one big group. This was only about five minutes from the start. Olympic Flame Barge
Hmmm...haven't made a post for a while. Been busy elsewhere. It's the opening ceremony of the Olympics today and the place has gone Olympic-daft...so just joining in!
Went down to the Thames at Chelsea Embankment this morning, to see the Olympic torch relay on the royal barge. Not a huge number of people on the embankment, certainly when compared to the road relay that I saw at Sloane Square yesterday, in the baking sunshine, which was a contrast to today with a spot of rain in the air. The barge was making its way from Hampton Court to Tower Bridge. Posted in categories Places Weather Events Post URL https://londontownblog.com/posts.php?post=103 |
